Riding the Shinkansen is one of the defining experiences of visiting Japan. These engineering marvels have connected the country since 1964 with a perfect safety record with zero passenger fatalities from derailments in over 60 years. The experience combines incredible speed (up to 320 km/h), Japanese precision (average delay of 54 seconds), and effortless comfort that makes flying feel primitive by comparison.
This guide covers everything a first-time rider needs to know: how to buy tickets, what to expect on board, the difference between train types, and the unwritten rules that make the experience smooth for everyone.

🚅
Hikari (Fast)

Be Aware
Seating Classes
Unreserved vs Reserved vs Green Car
Unreserved (自由席)
Cheapest option, no reservation needed
Board any unreserved car (typically cars 1-3)
First-come, first-served seating
Fine on off-peak trains, but risky during Golden Week/Obon
Can stand if all seats taken
Reserved (指定席) & Green Car
Reserved: ¥530 extra for a guaranteed specific seat
Free reservation with JR Pass at ticket office or SmartEX
Green Car: ¥5,000-8,000 extra for spacious first class
Green Car has wider 2+2 seats, more legroom, quieter
Worth it for long routes or peak travel days
For JR Pass holders, seat reservations are free, so there is no reason not to reserve, especially for popular routes and peak times.
How to Buy Tickets
🎫
Buying Shinkansen Tickets
1
SmartEX App (Recommended)
Download the SmartEX app, create an account with your credit card, and book Shinkansen tickets on your phone. Walk straight to the platform and tap your phone at the gate. Supports Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen (Tokyo-Hakata). Early-bird discounts available when booking 21 days ahead.
2
JR Ticket Office (みどりの窓口)
Staff at the "Midori no Madoguchi" counter sell tickets and make reservations. Tell them your destination, date, time preference, and whether you want reserved or unreserved. They speak basic English at major stations. Useful for complex itineraries.
3
Ticket Machines
Touch-screen machines at JR stations have an English language option. Select Shinkansen, choose your route, date, time, and seat type. Pay with credit card or cash. Machines print paper tickets to insert at the gate.
4
Online via JR website
JR Central, JR West, and JR East each have their own booking sites. Useful for advance purchase discounts. Print tickets at station machines using the QR code or reservation number.
Shinkansen Etiquette
✅ Do
Queue in marked lines on the platform, as they match car numbers
Store large luggage in overhead racks or behind the last row of seats
Keep phone on silent mode (manner mode, マナーモード)
Use the space between cars for phone calls
Recline your seat, as it is expected and polite (no need to ask)
Buy an ekiben (station bento) to eat on board, as it is part of the culture
❌ Don't
Don't talk on the phone in the car; step between cars instead
Don't eat strongly smelling food (no fast food)
Don't play audio without headphones
Don't leave luggage blocking the aisle
Don't rush to board, as trains stop for 1-2 minutes and there is time
Don't forget oversized luggage must go in designated areas (reserved free online)
⚠️
Oversized Luggage Rule
Luggage over 160 cm total dimensions (length + width + height) must be placed in the oversized luggage area behind the last row of certain cars. Reserve this space for free when booking your seat (select "with oversized luggage space"). Maximum size is 250 cm total. This applies to all Tokaido/Sanyo/Kyushu Shinkansen. No advance reservation is needed and you can just use the designated space, but reserving guarantees availability.
Pro Tips for Shinkansen Travel
Shinkansen FAQ
Can I bring luggage on the Shinkansen?
+
Yes, normal suitcases fit in the overhead rack or at your feet. Only bags over 160 cm total dimensions need the oversized luggage space (reserve for free when booking). There is no luggage limit or weight restriction. Most travelers have no issues with standard suitcases.
Is food available on the train?
+
Yes. A drinks cart passes through regularly on long-distance trains. Many trains also have vending machines between cars. However, the best strategy is to buy an ekiben (station bento) before boarding, as they are fresher, more varied, and part of the Shinkansen experience.
What if I miss my reserved train?
+
Your reserved seat ticket is only valid for that specific train. However, you can ride the unreserved cars of any later train on the same day and route at no extra cost. Your ticket does not become worthless; you just lose the seat guarantee.
How early should I arrive at the station?
+
Unlike flying, there is no check-in or security screening. Arrive 5-10 minutes before departure to find your platform and car. Trains are on the platform 2-3 minutes before departure and leave exactly on time. If you have a reserved seat, even 2 minutes is enough.
