Your first real decision in Japan happens at the airport: how to get to the city. Each airport has multiple options ranging from cheap local trains to premium express services to comfortable limousine buses. The right choice depends on where your hotel is, how much luggage you have, and whether you value speed or simplicity after a long flight.
This guide covers every major airport in Japan with clear recommendations for each situation. Bookmark this page, as you will reference it at both arrival and departure.
From Narita Airport to Tokyo
From Haneda Airport to Tokyo
Haneda Airport is only 17 km from central Tokyo (vs 66 km for Narita). Getting to the city takes 15-40 minutes and costs ¥300-1,300. If you have a choice of airports, Haneda is always more convenient and cheaper to reach. A new underground rail link directly to Tokyo Station is under construction (opening around 2031) which will make it even easier.

Open-Jaw Strategy: Fly Into One, Out the Other
A smart strategy for Japan is to fly into Tokyo (Narita/Haneda) and fly home from Osaka (Kansai), or vice versa. This "open-jaw" itinerary follows the natural Golden Route (Tokyo → Hakone → Kyoto → Osaka) without backtracking. Many airlines offer multi-city bookings at similar prices to round trips. Check Google Flights "multi-city" option to compare costs.
First Steps After Landing
Complete your Visit Japan Web registration before flying (generates a QR code). At the airport, scan your QR at the JESTA kiosk for faster processing. Immigration takes 15-60 minutes depending on the queue.
At the arrival hall, pick up a physical Suica at the JR ticket machines, or activate your JR Pass at the JR East Travel Service Center. If you set up Welcome Suica Mobile beforehand, skip this step entirely.
ATMs at 7-Eleven (inside the airport convenience stores) accept all major international cards. Withdraw ¥20,000-30,000 for your first few days. Many places accept cards, but cash is still useful for small shops and temples.
Head to the train platform. For N'EX or Skyliner, buy tickets at the dedicated counter or machine. For local trains, just tap your IC card at the gate. Airport buses have ticket counters in the arrival hall.
